HUAWEI – FROM MOBILE SWITCHES TO A GLOBAL ICT GIANT

Huawei the China-based information communication and technology giant is a multinational tech company based in Shenzhen, Guangdong. Funded just three decades ago Huawei has gained prominence in the global market as a leading global provider of information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure and smart devices. Today Huawei has its roots in more than 170 nations of the world have and it currently serves more than three billion people through various ICT devices.

Huawei was founded in 1987 by  Ren Zhengfei a former Deputy Regimental Chief in the People’s Liberation Army. The company was founded by Ren to manufacture telephone exchange switches and then the company took a flight of huge success, becoming a leading information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure and smart devices manufacturer in the world in just 30 years time span.

INITIAL YEARS

The initial business of the company started by reselling private branch exchange (PBX) switches which were imported from Hong Kong. The major success of the company came by 1991 when it launched China’s most powerful switch of contemporary time ‘C&C08 program controlled telephone switch’ . After 1994 company started manufacturing switches for the People’s Liberation Army of China also company bidding and won a key contract to build the first national telecommunications network for the People’s Liberation Army.

The biggest turning point for the company was the Chinese government’s decision to promote the local companies for the government contracts of telecommunications manufacturers and restricting access to foreign competitors. Huawei was promoted by both the government and the military and this was the moment of flight for the company. By this policy, the company begged many huge government contracts and it was successful in setting up research and development centers across China.

FOREIGN BUSINESS

Huawei soon started its legs into the international markets. It started exporting fixed-line network products to Hong Kong company Hutchison Whampoa in 1997 and later on, many more ICT products were available for foreign business.

By 1999 Huawei has its presence in India, the biggest potential ICT market of the future. The company started an office at Bengaluru, Karnataka.

Later on, Huawei partnered with many global tech giants for combined products like with partnered with 3Com on a joint venture known as H3C, which was focused on enterprise networking equipment in 2003.  Global Framework Agreement with Vodafone signed in 2005. In 2007, Huawei set up a joint venture with U.S. security software company Symantec Corporation, which eventually came to be known as Huawei Symantec, which had the business of providing end-to-end solutions for network data storage and security.

By 2012 Huwai has a wide-ranging global presence and it had a regional office in most of the developed and developing nations. In September 2017, Huawei created a Narrowband Internet of Things platforms for a city-aware network using a “one network, one platform, N applications” .

CURRENT BUSINESS STATS

Huawei collected worldwide revenues of about $ 105.1 billion for the year 2018, of which net profit was around US $ 8.7 billion. Huawei’s Q1 2019 revenues were up 39% year-over-year, at the US $ 26.76 billion.

By the end of the last quarter of 2018 Huawei has marketed more than 200 million-plus smartphones in the market in a single year.

Now the company is extending its legs in all the emerging ICT techs like the Internet of Things, Deep learning, Machine learning, 5G etc.
