OnePlus Open vs. Samsung Fold 5: 4 Key Areas Where OnePlus Takes Edge

by Shatakshi Gupta

Samsung has long dominated the foldable phone market, especially in India. But among other players, OnePlus has lately entered the fray with its new OnePlus Open, aiming to challenge Samsung’s dominance. Notably, the China-based smartphone maker has done justice to its debut foldable device and even surpassed Samsung in a few departments. Let’s find out the areas where the OnePlus Open may just outshine the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5.

4 things in which OnePlus Open is better than Galaxy Fold 5

  •  The OnePlus Open offers a better display

The OnePlus Open boasts a 7.82-inch foldable AMOLED display with a 2K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. Its squarish form factor ensures consistent visuals in any orientation. The 6.3-inch cover screen, slightly larger than the Fold 5’s 6.2-inch, resembles a conventional slab phone display. Both the inner and outer screens on the OnePlus Open shine brighter, with a peak brightness of 2,800 nits. Moreover, the crease in the OnePlus Open is almost impossible to find while using the device.

  •  More wallet-friendly

Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, the OnePlus Open offers a single 16GB RAM + 512GB storage option, which meets the needs of most users. This approach also makes the OnePlus Open more cost-effective compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 5. The OnePlus Open is priced at Rs 1,39,999, while an equivalent 512GB storage option for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 costs Rs 1,64,999, and it only offers 12GB of RAM. OnePlus takes the lead here in terms of affordability.

  • The OnePlus Open boasts a better camera

The OnePlus Open’s triple-lens rear camera system, with a 48MP primary sensor, a 48MP ultrawide sensor, and a 64MP telephoto sensor, delivers exceptional camera performance. In head-to-head tests, the OnePlus Open outshines the Galaxy Z Fold 5, making it arguably the best camera system on a foldable smartphone. Even the 32MP cover-screen camera impresses, and the 20MP inner display camera excels in preserving details and skin tones, surpassing the 4MP under-display camera of the Galaxy Z Fold 5.

  •  The OnePlus Open offers a larger battery

With a 4,800mAh battery, the OnePlus Open surpasses the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5’s 4400mAh battery. OxygenOS optimization, combined with the slightly larger battery capacity, provides the OnePlus Open with better endurance. What sweetens the deal is the 67W fast charging support, compared to the Fold 5’s 25W charging. OnePlus Open can charge from 0 to 100 percent in about 40 minutes, and it includes the charger in the box.

While the OnePlus Open seems to be a solid competitor to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 for these 4 reasons, it’s important to note that the OnePlus Open is a newcomer. Its long-term performance remains to be seen. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, on the other hand, is the fifth smartphone from the brand, and comes with improvements over its predecessors.

In a nutshell, the OnePlus Open presents a compelling alternative to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5. However, you cannot ignore the the established reputation of the Samsung device when making your choice.
